The seventy year time frame for copyright in Australia has never more seemed like a luxury. Copyright for sound recordings in Europe lasts for fifty years and accordingly, two independent labels have released their own version of ‘Love Me Do’ by The Beatles as the copyright to that sound recording has expired. Although an extension to copyright is in the pipeline, it does not work retroactively. Consequently, ‘Love Me Do’ will remain out of copyright.
