This week we interview Sanicki Lawyers solicitor and resident fashion expert Tugce Ayata on career advice, personal style, and why it’s important to pursue your passions in both work and life.
My parents would often joke that I was destined to be a lawyer because I always had a response for everything, never backed down from a debate, and absolutely refused to accept “no” without a convincing reason. I was naturally curious, fiercely independent, and unafraid to speak up. While I didn’t fully understand what being a lawyer entailed back then, I think the idea of it naturally stuck, and I decided to pursue it.
While I was in high school studying Legal Studies, my mum happened to be studying law at university – so I was surrounded by it both at school and at home. I’d often look over my mum’s assignments, help her brainstorm ideas, or just be curious about what she was learning. Watching her navigate the complexities of law while balancing so much in life really inspired me and reinforced my own interests in the field.
To anyone aspiring to become a lawyer, my biggest piece of advice would be this: lean into your curiosity and don’t be discouraged by how intense the journey might seem. Law can be incredibly rewarding, but it’s also a long game – persistence, passion, and a strong sense of purpose will carry you through. And don’t be afraid to carve out your own version of what a legal career looks like, it doesn’t have to follow a traditional mould. I also highly recommend interning or volunteering!
My closing argument? A killer outfit.
Serving looks and legal advice with equal precision.
I particularly enjoy working on commercial matters as they’re incredibly diverse. Whether it’s drafting contracts, navigating disputes, advising on structuring, or helping lay the legal groundwork for a new business venture, I love how these matters engage both my legal skills and entrepreneurial mindset. There’s a real satisfaction in helping bring a business idea to life or resolving a complex issue.
I also have a soft spot for trade promotion matters. While they’re governed by strict regulatory frameworks, there’s a creative side to them that I really enjoy. It’s rewarding to guide clients through the legal intricacies while also contributing to the more exciting, brand-building elements of their campaigns. It’s a nice balance between compliance and creativity.
Outside of law, I co-founded a fashion rental business in 2016 to make designer clothing more accessible and affordable.
I’m also a content creator on social media, which gives me the space to express my creativity and connect with a broader community. From fashion, lifestyle, travel and beauty, creating content allows me to blend my passions while also maintaining a professional identity.
For me, it’s always been about embracing all the things I’m passionate about and finding a way to make them work together. Success doesn’t have to mean choosing one path over another. If there’s one piece of advice I’d offer, it’s to never underestimate your ability to pursue more than one goal. That’s why I’ll continue balancing my life as a lawyer, entrepreneur, and content creator – each role brings something unique to the table and keeps me inspired in different ways. And knowing myself, I’ll likely be adding a few more self-sufficient ventures to the mix. There’s always room for growth when you create your own version of success.
